More than 70% of Ukraine identifies as Christian, and there are 25 Baptist regions across the country. In the face of incredible hardship, Baptists in Ukraine are serving with faith and courage, providing care for the thousands who are displaced. Six hundred Baptist churches in Ukraine have already served 45,000 displaced people. Baptist General Secretary Elijah Brown travelled to the region a number of days ago to provide spiritual encouragement and support of Baptist sisters and brothers who are uniting in prayer and advocating for peace. He writes:
“As brothers and sisters within a global Baptist family, we are all called to be both peacemakers and people of prayer,” says Brown. “As one Baptist family rooted in Jesus Christ as Lord, we bear witness to the biblical truth that ‘if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it.’ It is vital for Baptists around the world to stand with those who are suffering and to fervently pray for peace. We remain grateful for both Russian and Ukrainian Baptists who are part of the Baptist World Alliance and are demonstrating faithful Gospel witness in their communities.”
As well as prayer, we are encouraged to give financially to this crisis, and there are a number of avenues to do this. Two of these are:
- Through the Baptist World Alliance (BWA) Webpage - https://www.baptistworld.org/prayforpeace
You can also give to our NZ Baptist Missionary Society, and they will pass donations directly on to the BWA. You can use online banking with the following details:
