Just thinking…
Our world has become quick to show outrage. Have you noticed? It seems to be the 'go-to' response when our values or rights or freedoms are bruised. There is resounding silence coming from the middle ground, the measured response, the nuanced view. Instead, the airwaves are full of strident voices saying, “We are outraged that … (fill in the blank).” I happened to come across a plaque last week as I was walking. On it was the Prayer of St. Francis, and the words reminded me again of how differently we are called to walk this life. These words are teased out from the warp and woof of God’s message to us and offered back to Him as a prayer. I encourage you to read them slowly … chew on each phrase … note where they rub a sensitive spot … and ask the Holy Spirit for the grace to apply them to your life.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace
Where there is hatred, let me sow love
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith
Where there is despair, hope
Where there is darkness, light
And where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console
To be understood as to understand
To be loved as to love
For it is in giving that we receive
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen
In Him,
Murray
