Just thinking…

I have been looking out at my poor lawn since I got back home from holidays. When I left it was green and reasonably lush. Now, it is has a brown, ‘baked-in-the-oven’ appearance. Every morning I go out wondering if it will ever grow back, but experience has shown me that come Autumn, I will again have lawn crying out to be mown. The secret, or course, is the root system of the grass, which allows it to find nourishment even in extremely dry conditions. There is a kind of grass in the US called ‘bunch grass’ that grows in the hilly high country. Its root system is deep, far-reaching, and very extensive. A single plant may have up to 27 kilometres of roots growing underground(!), which allows it to withstand all the punishment that weather and livestock can throw at it. We, too, are called to Grow in God. To continue the analogy, this means that we need to grow a root system that is deeply embedded into God. How do we know if we have this? Perhaps ask yourself some questions: does your use of time show a God-priority? When a crisis hits, where is the first place that you turn to? Are you a ‘fair-weather friend’ of Jesus, or one who clings to him even in times of spiritual dryness? Is Jesus your role model for living? Do you find your sense of joy and life increases as you think about him, chat with him, serve him? May our roots delve deep this year, and may our growth grow as a result!
