We normally don’t think much about the way we view time. It just is. But there are huge differences in the way that different cultures appreciate and understand time. For most ancient cultures and, I have been told, by Buddhist, Hindu and other worldviews which spring from an Indian understanding of reality, time is cyclical. It was imagined to be like a wheel that keeps spinning around, bringing a continuing repetition of ages. And this is easy to understand - Summer slides into Autumn, but before long, Summer comes around again. The sun, the moon and the stars cycle through the sky. The crops grow in cyclical rhythms of life and death. And yet, strangely, the western view of time is linear rather than cyclic – it has a beginning and a direction. Thomas Cahill, in his book The Gifts of the Jews: How a Tribe of Desert Nomads Change the Way Everyone Thinks and Feels, reckons that a view of time which has a beginning and an ending was a remarkable innovation that began with the Jews, was adopted by Christianity and through this route, spread to influence much of the world … and of course, us today. Why did the Jews innovate in this way? It all started with the words, “In the beginning ...” – words which describe the start of a story called History. And with those words found in Genesis 1:1, we suddenly have an inkling of the importance of other words like purpose, destiny, direction and conclusion. Does your life have a purpose? A destiny? Is history moving towards something? If you think ‘yes’, then whether you know it or not, it is because of the book of Genesis. This Sunday we begin a journey into this most foundational of books. Come along!
