Just thinking…
“It’s not the Church of God that has a mission in the world but the God of mission that has a church in the world.” This is a quote attributed to Rowan Williams, a former Archbishop of Canterbury. If you dig into this thought a little, you will find that it has a perspective-changing power. Looking at mission through this lens, we see that mission does not belong to the church, it belongs to God. He is a mission-minded God, and so mission is not something that we can jettison from our strategic plan list when something cooler comes along. If we are actually following God, we must follow him into mission because that’s where he is! We also see through the lens of this quote that we are in the world for the purpose of mission. Oh, how quickly this priority slips in the life of churches as well as of individual Christ-followers! A million other (usually more comfortable) priorities rise to the top and conspire to bump mission from the prime place. But it is for the purpose of showing our community the character and love of Jesus that we shine (Glow). It is for the purpose of equipping ourselves for mission that we become like Jesus (Grow). It is for the purpose of telling people about Jesus that day-by-day we meet people where they are at (Go). This Sunday we begin Prayer and Self-Denial – a period where we focus on overseas mission. Let this be a reminder again of the reason we exist – to Glow, Grow and Go.
