Just thinking…

There is a story about one of the greatest theologians of the 20th century, Karl Barth.  When asked in 1962 on a visit to America how he would summarize the essence of the millions of words he had published, he replied, "Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so." This is a picture of the phrase : ‘The simplicity on the far side of complexity’. It talks about getting to a renewed appreciation of a simple but profound truth after doing the hard work of deep thinking, deep research and deep reflection. A complete ‘newbie’ may arrive at the same conclusion, but their understanding is simple and shallow whereas the other understanding is simple and deep. When you come across someone who has thought long and hard about something, their depth of understanding brings richness to your own. “Jesus forgives my sins” may be  a decent summary of Hebrews chapters 8-9, but the writer takes us on an amazing journey through the ‘back story’ of this simple truth. The result? Hopefully a vastly greater appreciation in our hearts and minds when this simple phrase is found on our lips. Come along this Sunday as we journey through the complexity to the simplicity of this profound phrase.

In Him,

This Sunday 7 April…

"Of Forgiveness and the Auckland Harbour Bridge” Have you ever had a wake-up call when you realise just how lucky you are? This is what Hebrews 8-9 is supposed to be to Christians who are a bit over-familiar with their forgiveness.
