Just Thinking…

One of the clearest ways that we see what someone values is by looking at what they celebrate … or don’t celebrate. Take Brexit, for example. The pro-Brexit part of the UK population partied when Britain’s exit from the EU was voted in; for the anti-Brexit portion, celebration was the last thing on their minds. For both, their willingness to celebrate reflected their value system. We celebrate things that matter to us, don’t we? Which sparks an uncomfortable question, ‘If we aren’t celebrating something, does it actually really matter to us?’ As we’ve talked about before, the nation of Israel had celebration booked into its yearly schedule in multiple places, and I reckon they were onto something – the same thing that C.S. Lewis was talking about when he said, ‘praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment; it is its appointed consummation.’ Celebration forms a ‘feedback loop’ with our values. The more we celebrate something, the more we enjoy it and appreciate its worth, and so the more we want to celebrate it … etc.! So … let’s celebrate Jesus. Let’s celebrate his goodness to us. Let’s celebrate the journey he has taken us on this year as his people. And let’s do it this Sunday! I’ll see you there.
