Foundations are the unsung heroes of buildings. Usually unseen and unapplauded, they are never noticed unless they give way, and then the whole edifice suffers along with them. Which is why builders and engineers spend such a large amount of time on getting the foundations right; they know that everything depends on their structural integrity. Done well, the unseen foundation work gives the entire building the best possible chance for longevity and stability. I liken the foundations of a building to the habits of discipleship that are present in the life of a follower of Jesus. These habits are often unseen by the outside world, taking place ‘below the surface’ of a person’s life. And yet the evidence for them is seen in the observed life of the Christian. If these habits are strong, the Christian is far more likely to approach the highs and lows of each day in an attitude of trust, dependence and joy in Christ. If they are weak, the Christian is more vulnerable to life’s vagaries and slower to tap into heaven’s resources. How strong are your spiritual foundations? This Sunday, we will hear from a number of people about the habits and practices that they have found build stronger foundations in their lives. Come along and be inspired!
