Just Thinking…

Over the last couple of years at the annual national Baptist gathering called ‘The Hui’, there has been space given to affirming the role of women in ministry and in leadership within our denomination. For some of us this came as a surprise, as we thought such an affirmation was a ‘no-brainer’ and an issue long since worked through. But at last year’s Hui, I happened to be driving some women home from one of the meetings, and as I listened to them talk about this issue, there was a sense of a ‘reality check’ for me. One of them felt very supported by her church in her leadership role, while the other (from a different Baptist church) felt very much the opposite, showing the diversity of experience within local congregations. On this topic, as with all topics, we need to be guided by scripture rather than by culture. So, what does scripture say? Well … it’s complex … and to say otherwise is to not treat fairly the different strands of guidance we find, particularly in the New Testament. However, as I have looked at the evidence of scripture, I have become convinced of the support it gives to women in leadership and teaching roles within churches. This Sunday we will be looking at this topic, so come with your brains warmed up and ready to engage!
